We are very happy to host Matt Chingos of the DC Education Research Collaborative and State Board of Education (SBOE) representative for Ward 3, Ruth Wattenberg.
We will first hear from Matt Chingos and have an opportunity to ask questions. The DC Education Research Collaborative is a consortium of 15 organizations, headed by the Urban Institute, which conducts research designed and implemented in partnership with members of the DC education community.
Then we will talk about SBOE (https://sboe.dc.gov/) happenings. In particular, she will talk about the work that the School Board is doing looking again into the School Transparency and Reporting (STAR) framework for school-level report cards as required by the Every Student Success Act (ESSA).
With our remaining time, we will talk about school budgets and the Community Working Group on Foxhall and MacArthur.

ENROLL NOW FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR
We are in enrollment season, and like last year, enrollment will happen online. Per Dr. Hedlund’s recent message, please take time to carefully review the proof of residency requirements before submitting documentation. If your documents do not meet the requirements, your child cannot be enrolled. OSSE is unyielding about this aspect of enrollment, and Shepherd will not receive funding for students who are not enrolled properly. Thank you so much for your attention to this matter.
SUPPORT DEAL MIDDLE SCHOOL’S PLAY!
Sit back and follow the adventures of the Bennet sisters of Hertfordshire, England. Pride and Prejudice is like a fairytale, only with a dose of scandal and amusing interludes in the form of comic characters. It has great characters, an intriguing plot, is full of surprises, and the longed-for happy ending. This love story transcends the class boundaries and challenges the traditional role of women, encouraging partnerships of mutual affection and respect – an ideal that has endured through to the current day.
We have an incredible cast featuring 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from across the community. Come on out and cheer on your friends, family, and schoolmates.
This is a virtual performance that has been previously recorded. Premiering Friday, June 4 at 7:00 pm, and available as Video on Demand through June 13. Get a free ticket for a viewing link here.
Save the Date! Ms. Johnson’s Retirement Celebration “Drive By” on Fri, June 18th from 4-5 pm
Ms. Johnson from PK3 will be retiring from teaching at the end of this school year. Shepherd staff and teachers, together with the PTO, are arranging a “drive by” event from 4PM to 5PM on Friday, June 18th, at the school. We welcome all current and former Shepherd students and friends of Ms. Johnson to join us for the special event.
Also, please consider posting a keepsake message or photo for Ms. Johnson on her “Kudoboard”: https://www.kudoboard.com/boards/wiv9O9t1
More details regarding traffic flow for the event will follow in the coming weeks. We are still looking for a few volunteers to help with set-up at 3PM on the day of the event. If you’re interested, please email info@shepherd-elementary.org. Look forward to seeing you on the 18th!!
