Happy Summer! Please find the PDF of this week’s Bulletin here.

Welcome Interim Principal Russell

On July 21st, Ms. Tyra Russell was named Interim Principal for Shepherd Elementary.

Ms. Russell began her teaching career in 2007 working with beginning readers and early childhood education students. In 2009, she began teaching at The Academy Charter School in New York as a founding kindergarten teacher.

In 2016, Ms. Russell moved to DC to accept the Assistant Principal position at Savoy Elementary School within DCPS. During her time there, she had the opportunity to work closely with the principal on responsibilities including balancing the school budget, recruiting, and maintaining talent, coaching regarding English Language Arts (ELA) and Math curriculum, and providing teachers with productive observations and feedback to continue student success at Savoy.

Please join us in welcoming Principal Russell to the Shepherd Community!

Welcome New Shepherd Families

We want to extend a warm welcome to all new Shepherd Elementary Families and of course a Welcome Back to those currently in our community!

These Shepherd Bulletins are released weekly during the school year as a way for the PTO community to remain informed on news, correspondence and events.

Please encourage any new Shepherd Families to register for A to Z connect so they can receive these weekly bulletins and stay connected to the PTO.

Popsicles with the Principal

Please join Principal Russell for a Meet and Greet on Friday August 5th from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm in the front school courtyard.  All staff and families are welcome!

Townhall with Principal Russell

On August 9th, Principal Russell will be holding a Townhall with the community from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm.  Please be on the lookout for an email from Principal Russell with the virtual meeting details.

New Crossing Guard at 16th and Kalmia

Last spring, the PTO worked with DDOT and Council Member Janeese Lewis George’s office to perform an observational count of pedestrians at the corner of 16th and Kalmia.  The data indicated that 16th and Kalmia met the requirements for a safety officer.

DDOT recently announced that they plan to deploy a Traffic Control Office (TCO) at 16th & Kalmia beginning this school year with plans for a more permanent crossing guard in the near future.  Thank you to parents, Principal Russell, and Council Member Janeese Lewis George’s office for your help in ensuring our students’ safety.

2022-2023 180 Fund

Help the Shepherd PTO fund lots of great events, initiatives, and extra circular efforts at Shepherd this year by donating to the 180 Fund.

It’s called the 180 Fund because there are 180 instructional days in the school year and your donation of a dollar a day per student helps the PTO support sending students on offsite field trips, funding teacher educational wish lists, putting on school plays and concerts, updating outdoor playground equipment, funding additional academic supports, and hosting school-wide events! This budget really helps us give our students even more unique, meaningful and enriching opportunities each year.

Any contribution is always much appreciated. And as a reminder, your contribution is 100% tax deductible. Thanks for your support – we’re looking forward to getting back to BETTER THAN NORMAL!
