Responsive Classroom
Shepherd Elementary will begin implementing Responsive Classroom during the 2021-2022 school year. We are excited to promote this SEL approach to both teaching and learning. Responsive Classroom has been lauded as one of the most effective evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL) programs. We look forward to the positive impact this program will have on student learning and well-being.
About Responsive Classroom
From the Responsive Classroom website: Responsive Classroom is a student-centered, social and emotional learning (SEL) approach to teaching and discipline, designed to create safe, joyful, and engaging classroom and school communities for both students and teachers.
Schools and teachers that adopt the Responsive Classroom approach focus on (1) creating optimal learning conditions for students to develop the academic, social, and emotional skills needed for success in and out of school, and (2) building positive school and classroom communities where students learn, behave, hope, and set and achieve goals.
Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based approach to teaching and discipline that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness. The Responsive Classroom approach is associated with higher academic achievement in math and reading, improved school climate, and higher-quality instruction. It has been described by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) as one of the most “well-designed evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL) programs”.
